Precision medicine (PM) tailors healthcare to account for variables in each patient’s genes, environment, lifestyle, and other factors. The Forum report will recommend how PM can be implemented based on the expertise of those at the forefront of its practice and development. The crucial measurable results for PM – patient outcomes and lowered costs – will be discussed, as well as how those can be incentivized within health care systems. The report will address the benefits of cross-referencing relevant data. Properly analyzing the full breadth of information gathered by health systems has produced unexpected advances in both practice and policy. Guided by the principles of PM, developing the collection and analysis of such data could reveal even better methods to improve healthcare. In addition, the report will delve into the ever-present legal, ethical, and social concerns surrounding data collection, and will suggest how PM can be supported and funded at the system level, leveraging public-private partnerships to create sustainable, effective change.
The post Precision Medicine appeared first on WISH.

Investing in Health Forum will examine how investment across various sectors can reduce mortality and simultaneously boost inclusive income, presenting synthesized findings that illustrate the economic returns sustained from research and development across health industries. The conference will draw on case studies from China, Ghana and Myanmar to support parts of the findings. Participants will argue that publicly financed health interventions and cost effectiveness have the potential to boost social welfare, presenting research on the impact of publicly financed insurance and ways to raise public financing in universal health coverage. One case study will show that in Lebanon, for example, an increase in tobacco tax would enhance financial risk protection. Finally, the speakers will recommend that the actionable policy implications derived from the above research should be directed towards governments as well as donors.

The Healthy Populations Forum will seek to define the concept of population health, explain why a strategy is needed to address it, and list actions for policymakers to improve it. By discussing case studies based on community and employer-led initiatives, healthcare systems and city-wide approaches, the paper will lay out a framework for a population health management strategy that will translate into actionable policy recommendations. Among the topics the report will cover are the significance of technology and innovation in enhancing the health of populations, in both low and high-income countries. It will shed light on how technology has transformed the way healthcare is delivered in certain countries, while identifying possible interventions that lead to short and long-term impact.

This forum will examine the management of incidental findings through the lens of the Islamic ethical tradition. The success of the pioneering genomic initiatives in the Gulf region necessitates building up an interdisciplinary solid knowledge-base which takes into consideration the religio-cultural fabric of the region and the Muslim world to which the region belongs. This knowledge base should pair the scientific research with cutting-edge research in Islamic ethics which should also engage in serious dialogue with relevant international bioethical deliberations. For the first time in the Muslim world, the ‘Genomics in the Gulf Region and Islamic Ethics’ forum of the WISH summit produces a comprehensive report on the ethical management of incidental findings. The report outlines the status quo of genomics in the Gulf region, relevant international bioethical deliberations and particularly focuses on the possible contribution of Islamic ethics to this emerging field. The report also makes policy recommendations on how to create culturally sensitive guidelines.

The Cardiovascular Disease Forum will offer a brief overview of coronary heart disease, including its epidemiology, burden and pressure on healthcare systems, outlining the distinction between illness prevention and management of acquired risk factors. It will also outline innovations in strategies to ensure prevention, such as lifestyle choices and broader tobacco control, including the reduction of tobacco use and the impact of smoking bans in public places. Participants will hear a variety of potential policies and innovations that can be applied more broadly by policymakers from prevention to treatment. During the Forum, experts will present ‘value pools,’ a collection of policies for improved outcomes and costs, using a wide range of global healthcare systems that have found success in utilizing the practice (among them, WHO’s mHealth NCD initiative in Senegal). A range of interventions — including policies, delivery and provider models and data and analytics — as well as actors, from payors to governments and companies, will be presented.

The Behavioral Insights Forum will present groundbreaking, evidence-based research showing how citizens’ health can be improved through a better understanding and application of the latest research. Led by a UK government-owned social purpose company, The Behavioral Insights Team, this research studies the factors that influence human behavior thereby producing evidence that can prove vital to improving the health of populations. Using a broad definition of health, the report will cover three main areas: quality of life and wellbeing, public health, and delivery of healthcare. It will further demonstrate how behavioral insights can be applied at the macro level of high-level policies and system design, as well as at the micro-level of experimentation, in order to achieve incremental improvements for the benefit of societies.
The post Behavioral Insights appeared first on WISH.

The Autism Forum will provide case studies and diagrams outlining actions that must be taken across the health, education, and social sectors involved in addressing the condition. Raising awareness and enhancing knowledge of the condition by understanding the cultural needs and barriers to best practices, for example, will facilitate treatment and the development of educational curricula. The Autism report will recommend that interdisciplinary training spans sectors, with providers, teachers, and families working together to ensure best treatment for the individual at the earliest stages possible. At home, modifications can be made with respect to services offered and equipment requested, along with counseling and education.
The post Autism appeared first on WISH.

The Accountable Care Forum will outline the benefits of using an integrated accountable care system to assist patients suffering from chronic diseases, such as diabetes, and who require rigorous, all-encompassing treatment plans. The study will involve a pool of people aged 18 and above diagnosed with type-2 diabetes or pre-diabetes and those at high risk of developing the disease. Conference participants will receive detailed action plans and recommendations, including the process of identifying the cohort; the singling out of individuals within the group suffering from diabetes; a screening plan for the remaining subjects; the development of a care pathway; the establishment of a multidisciplinary team to manage patient care; and individualised healthcare plans and project monitoring.
The post Accountable Care appeared first on WISH.
