Prof. Nisreen Alwan

Nisreen Alwan is a Professor of Public Health at the School of Primary Care, Population Sciences and Medical Education, Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton and an Honorary Consultant in Public Health at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. She leads research on optimising the wellbeing of young families for better long-term health, and how to reduce health inequalities.
Professor Alwan is trained in medicine, epidemiology, and health research. She has contributed to the public health response to the pandemic, particularly focusing on the recognition and the quantification of morbidity from COVID19, having initiated the call to “Count ‘Long COVID’”. Her current research focuses on long Covid, particularly addressing inequalities in prevention, recognition, and care.
Professor Alwan was awarded an MBE for services to Medicine and Public Health during the pandemic in the Queen’s New Year Honours 2021 and named among women leading change from across the world for her long Covid work in the BBC 100 Women 2020 list. Nisreen delivered a TEDx talk describing public health communication, power, objectivity, and vulnerability themes related to long Covid.
