Dr. Satoru Miyano

Satoru Miyano, PhD, is the Founding Director of M&D Data Science Center at the Tokyo Medical and Dental University, established in 2020 after he completed his tenure as Director of Human Genome Center at the Institute of Medical Science, University of Tokyo. Dr. Miyano received his bachelor’s (1977), master’s (1979) and PhD (1984) in Mathematics from Kyushu University.
As part of the the Cabinet Office’s inter-ministry program, titledthe Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP) Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hospital, Program Director Dr. Yusuke Nakamura drew a vision of a near-future hospital in Society 5.0, harnessed with AI technology. Dr. Miyano served as the sub-Program Director of AI Hospital from 2018 to 2022. He is currently managing the Post-AI Hospital Project BRIDGE (2023) and SBIR (2023-present).
His research field is bioinformatics. He led the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Scientific Research on Innovative Areas, including the Systems Cancer Project and the Systems Cancer in Neodimension. He was named a Fellow of the International Society for Computational Biology in 2013. He was presented with the 2016 Uehara Memorial Foundation Award for his contributions to the advancement of cancer genomics, the 2020 Healthy Society Award for his pioneering work on cancer research using supercomputers and AI, and the 2023 Okawa Prize for his cutting-edge research on whole-genome and cancer genome analysis using supercomputers.
