Dr. Alkhal graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1989 after which he joined Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) in the State of Qatar as an intern. In 1991 he joined the Internal Medicine Residency training program at the University of Connecticut Medical, CT, USA. After completing the 3-year residency he successfully completed a 2-year fellowship program in Infectious Diseases at Hartford Hospital and then worked as an attending (consultant) of Infectious Diseases at Hartford Hospital, Hartford, CT for 6 months. He was awarded the Diploma of the American Board in Internal Medicine in 1994 and Diploma of the American Board of Infectious Diseases in 1996. He was recertified in Infectious Disease in 2013. Dr. Alkhal holds several clinical positions and chairs many committees and has led several strategic projects at Hamad Medical Corporation including the ACGME-I accreditation, the planning and completing of the Communicable Disease Center and the Itqan Clinical Simulation Center. He served as the Chair of Family Medicine from 1999 to 2001 and the Chair of the Department of Medicine from 2001 until December 2012. As well as being the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Education, and Director of Medical Education and DIO, Dr. Alkhal is the Head of Infectious Diseases Division since 1998 and the Lead of the Communicable Disease Center. He is also the National TB Program Manager and the Director of the Clinical AIDS Program. Dr. Alkhal has an advisory role to several public health programs including pandemic preparedness and the Antimicrobial Resistance Program under the umbrella of the Ministry of Public Health. He has publications in the field of internal medicine, pharmacology, infectious diseases and medical education and is involved in ongoing research projects. Dr. Alkhal has a faculty appointment as Adjunct Professor of Clinical Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar and a Clinical Professor of Medicine at QU College of Medicine as well. He served as a founding member of the QU College of Medicine.
