YANGON – Myanmar’s opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi arrived back from Qatar yesterday after attending the World Innovation Summit for Health.

She was welcomed back by officials and members of her National League for Democracy (NLD) party and supporters at Yangon International Airport.

Suu Kyi participated in the two-day summit that took place in Doha, Qatar, at the invitation of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser and the Right Honourable Professor Lord Darzi of Denham.

At the summit, she delivered a keynote speech on challenges facing Myanmar’s healthcare system and how to reform it.

In the speech, she said that the country’s deteriorating healthcare system was not only due to inadequate equipment but also due to mismanagement. Every Myanmar citizen was hoping for healthcare, she added.

“I would like to see the kind of healthcare system that is dependent not only on wealth but on values,” said Suu Kyi.

The NLD’s leader was accompanied by Tin Myo Win, chairman of the NLD’s Health Network, personal assistant Tin Mar Aung and Central Executive Committee member and Lower House MP Dr Aung Moe Nyo.

Venerable Sitagu Sayadaw Nanissara, who is working on free healthcare services in many countries, also attended the summit.
