Dr. Kevin Stewart To Lead Live Talks As Part Of ‘Safer Care Accelerator’ Series

Doha, Qatar, 6 October 2015: The World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH), a global initiative of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF), in partnership with Imperial College London, is to host a webinar this week to discuss concerns surrounding unprofessional behaviour by some doctors who pose an unacceptable risk to patient safety.

Taking place on October 7, the webinar forms part of the ‘Safer Care Accelerator’ series by Leading Health Systems Network (LHSN), a WISH initiative which shares best practice and inspires health systems worldwide to provide safer care for patients. The initiative is in line with QF’s vision to reinforce Qatar’s pioneering role as an emerging centre for healthcare innovation while unlocking human potential.

Dr. Kevin Stewart, clinical director of the Clinical Effectiveness and Evaluation Unit at the Royal College of Physicians, will lead the webinar entitled, ‘Unprofessional behaviour: An unacceptable risk to patient safety’. The webinar will reveal that although a vast majority of doctors behave to the highest professional standards there is clear evidence to suggest a link between unprofessional behaviour and medical errors.

The seminar will focus on the key challenges facing health systems and it will attempt to determine what is regarded as unprofessional behaviour and to understand its detrimental effects on patients. There will also be a discussion on the best approaches to dealing with such behaviour, which has been found to also be demonstrated by some nurses and managers, in a bid to promote better practices.

Dr Stewart said: “Our aim is to analyse the evidence we have seen that shows unprofessional behaviour practiced by a minority of doctors can indeed be closely linked to patient harm. Although there are likely to be some differences between specialties and between healthcare systems what evidence exists seems to indicate similar patterns. We want to highlight these concerns and famliarise ourselves with appropriate approaches to dealing with this in order to improve the quality of healthcare and ensure best practices are a top priority and are in place.”

WISH launched the LHSN Safer Care Accelerator Programme to share best practice and inspire health systems worldwide to provide safer care for patients. The year-long programme will bring together a global network of healthcare organisations to exchange insights, experiences, and data on the topic of patient safety, culminating in the publication of a global report. So far, 18 organisations spanning six continents have joined the effort, including Hamad Medical Corporation and Sidra Medical and Research Centre from Qatar. WISH CEO Egbert Schillings commented: “One in ten people will be harmed during their hospitalisation. That is why decided to focus the program on patient safety for the entire year. No other program has ever done benchmarking and best practice spreading at a global scale in this way before and we are proud to have Qatar Foundation lead the way for the benefit of patients everywhere.”
The Safer Care Accelerator Programme is part of WISH and Imperial College London’s LHSN initiative. Established in 2009, LHSN has worked with 21 health systems in 11 countries helping them to overcome the challenges they face in providing high-value care to the populations they serve. Members of LHSN compare performance relative to their peers, learn from experts and frontline implementers during webinars, and are active members in a community committed to care improvement and innovation.
