WISH announces Mustafa Suleyman as a keynote speaker at 2016 summit

The World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH) has announced Mustafa Suleyman as one of four keynote speakers at its anticipated summit, which takes place in Doha on November 29 and 30 November.

Mustafa Suleyman is co-founder and head of Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) at DeepMind, where he is responsible for integrating the company’s technology across a wide range of Google products.

In February 2016, he launched DeepMind Health, which builds clinician-led technology in the UK National Health Service.

Suleyman was chief product officer at DeepMind Technologies before the company was bought in 2014 by Google in their largest European acquisition to date.

Suleyman’s keynote address will outline how health systems around the world are grappling with the challenge of delivering better patient outcomes and experience with fewer resources.

He will explain how, while new technologies have changed the way people shop, bank and travel, the same levels of productivity and improvements have not been seen in healthcare, where drawbacks in the use of health IT have often outweighed benefits.

Better technology and advancements in data science~will~support evidence-based, coordinated patient care as well as transforming research by giving scientists new ways to understand disease and develop better treatments, he will argue.

“Few social priorities are as important as health and one of the greatest opportunities of our lifetimes will come from applying the world’s most cutting-edge technologies to the goal of~improving care and preventing avoidable deaths. There are many brilliant people working across the world to make this happen and it will be an honour to share thoughts and ideas with them at WISH,” he said.

Suleyman joins an exciting line-up of keynote speakers for WISH 2016, including Professor Dame Sally Davies, England’s Chief Medical Officer; Lawrence H Summers, the Charles W Eliot University Professor and President Emeritus at Harvard~University; and Dr Julio Frenk, Mexico’s former Minister of Health.

CEO of WISH Egbert Schillings said,”The work done at DeepMind is helping to provide us with a new view of human health. It has the potential to allow us to better predict long-term health conditions and identify non-traditional intervention points, as well as to design better diagnostics tools, prevent diseases and increase access to and reduce the costs of healthcare.”
