Prof. Jonathan Valabhji
Professor Jonathan Valabhji is the Clinical Chair in Medicine at Imperial College London, an Honorary Consultant Diabetologist at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and the National Clinical Lead for Multiple Long-Term Conditions (MLTCs) at NHS England. From April 2013 until September 2023, he served as the National Clinical Director for Diabetes and Obesity at NHS England. He established the NHS England Diabetes and Obesity Programmes and more recently, the NHS England MLTCs Programme. These programmes have involved a broad portfolio of national work streams including lifestyle interventions, clinical care, and technological support for self-management. Professor Valabhiji has led rapid translation of high-quality diabetes research into national policy and practice and has established models for evaluation to assess translational impact. He successfully advocated for, and led, the implementation of the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme, including digital modes of delivery, with over 1.6 million people with pre-diabetes now referred to the programme. He has also published evidence demonstrating a reduction in Type 2 diabetes incidence among programme participants and at the English population level associated with programme implementation. He qualified in 1990 from Saint Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, London. In 2019, he was awarded Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen’s New Year Honours List for services to diabetes and obesity care.
