Dr Julio Frenk became President of the University of Miami in 2015, where he is also Professor of both Public Health Sciences and Health Sector Management and Policy. Prior to joining the University of Miami, Dr Frenk was Dean of the Faculty at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and also the T & G Angelopoulos Professor of Public Health and international Development. He served as Minister of Health in Mexico from 2000 to 2006, where he pursued ambitious health system reforms and introduced a program of universal coverage, which expanded access to healthcare for over 55 million previously uninsured Mexicans. Dr Frenk was founding Director- General of the National institute of Public Health in Mexico. in 1998, he joined the World Health Organization as Executive Director in charge of Evidence and information for Policy, explicitly charged with developing a scientific foundation for health policy to achieve better outcomes. He also served as a Senior Fellow in the Global Health Program of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and as President of the Carso Health institute in Mexico City. He is the founding Chairman of the board of the institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington. Dr Frenk holds a medical degree from the National University of Mexico, and a Master of Public Health and a joint PhD in Medical Care Organization and Sociology from the University of Michigan. He received the Clinton Global Citizen Award in 2008.
