Dr. Françoise Shenfield

Dr. Françoise Shenfield is an Honorary Professor Associate at the Institute of Women’s Health, University College London (UCL), where she specializes in infertility and medical ethics. She is also a member of the French National Academy of Medicine and has more than three decades of experience in clinical care, medical education, research, and ethics in reproductive medicine.

Dr. Shenfield previously served as Clinical Lecturer in Infertility at UCL Medical School and provided specialist care to infertile couples at the university hospitals. She has held prominent leadership roles within international reproductive medicine organizations, including the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO), where she has been a member of the Ethics Committee since 2005 and served as Co-Chair from 2009 to 2015. She was also a member of the Executive Committee of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) from 2007 to 2013 and was a founding member of its Ethics and Law Special Interest Group and Taskforce.

Her academic and professional work focuses on the ethical, legal, and social dimensions of fertility and reproductive medicine, as well as cancer care. She contributes to working groups of the French National Academy of Medicine and the French League Against Cancer, and regularly teaches and lectures at UCL, ESHRE, and other international fertility societies and research institutes.

Dr. Shenfield has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and contributed to more than 20 ESHRE statements on ethical issues in assisted reproduction. She is also co-editor of five books and author of 15 book chapters covering topics including the human embryo in vitro, preimplantation genetic testing, cryopreservation of gametes and tissues, cross-border reproductive care, uterine transplantation, and surrogacy.
