Giles Duley is the United Nations Global Advocate for persons with disabilities in conflict and peacebuilding situations. A renowned storyteller and communicator, he founded the Legacy of War Foundation, a non- governmental organization supporting communities affected by conflict.
Duley began his career as a music photographer but shifted to documentary work in 2004, collaborating with humanitarian organisations like Handicap International, EMERGENCY, Save the Children, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to shed light on lesser-known stories.
In 2011, while embedded with a United States military unit in Afghanistan, Duley was severely injured by an Improvised Explosive Device, losing three limbs. After months of surgeries, prosthetics, and rehabilitation, he returned to Afghanistan within a year to continue his work.
His photography focuses on the long-term humanitarian impact of conflict, connecting personally with explosive ordnance survivors by sharing meals and experiences. Through his work, Duley advocates for comprehensive medical assistance, rehabilitation, prosthetics, psychosocial support, and equal access to social, economic, and educational opportunities for survivors.
