NELA BioDynamics is a spin-off from a cooperation between the Polytechnic University of Valencia and INCLIVA, a healthcare research institute based in Spain. Its mission is to provide innovative technological solutions, aimed to improve the patient’s quality of life and the sustainability of healthcare systems at the level of orthopedic surgery. By 2050, 130M people are expected to suffer from osteoarthritis, of which 40M will need joint replacements. Changes in lifestyle are an added risk factor to other population strata. These changes are estimated to affect 20-33% of the world’s population. Even though they are very traumatic and imprecise, techniques used today haven’t changed in 40 years, causing many problems that can be solved. NELA presents a disruptive implant. Its patented technology eliminates the need to fix the stem by hammering rasps or using bone cement. The surgical technique developed reduces the surgical time in half and the post-operative time to a few hours. It also reduces the cost of the process by transforming joint replacement into an outpatient procedure. Furthermore, the surgeon can precisely control the amount of fixation according to the patient’s bone quality, allowing a customized treatment. Critical testing has been carried out, confirming the advantages of this implant. Currently, NELA BioDynamics is launching a pre-series A round to finish pre-clinical testing and start clinical trials in 2023.
