Dr. Abou-Samra is an academic MD/PhD physician-scientist certified in internal medicine and endocrinology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Abou-Samra has held positions at several international academic institutions, which include Lyon I University in France for 5 years, the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, for 2 years, Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital for 21 years, and the Wayne State University School of Medicine for 5 years. At Wayne State, he was Professor of Medicine, Professor of Physiology and Professor of Molecular Genetics, as well as Chief of the Endocrine Division, Director of the Endocrinology Fellowship Program and Director of a T32 endocrine research training program. Dr. Abou-Samra has received multiple recognitions for his scientific contributions and led research funded continuously by the National Institutes of Health between 1986 to 2014. He served as a member of the NIH Endocrine Study Section and as a member of the editorial board for several international journals. Dr. Abou-Samra has contributed to over 300 publications in peer-reviewed journals and holds 5 U.S patents; his h-index is 67 on Google Scholar. Prof. Abou-Samra joined HMC in 2013, where he is the Director of the Qatar Metabolic Institute, Deputy Chief Medical Officer and Chief Quality Officer.  He also serves as Co-Chair of the National Diabetes Committee, Ministry of Public Health.
