Dr. Khaled Abdelghaffar is a distinguished Egyptian academic and government leader who has been serving as Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development since June 2024. He also holds the position of Minister of Health and Population, a role he has occupied since August 2022. Previously, he served as Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research from February 17, 2017, until August 31, 2022. Dr. Abdelghaffar has an extensive academic background in dentistry. He headed the Department of Oral Medicine, Periodontology, Diagnosis, and Radiology at the Faculty of Dentistry, Ain Shams University from 2009 to November 2015. In 2014, he was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at Ain Shams University, where he was instrumental in introducing state-of-the-art dental equipment to the institution. Following this, he served as Vice President of Ain Shams University for Graduate Studies and Research, during which time he earned the State Encouragement Prize in Medical Sciences and published 20 research papers in international journals. Dr. Abdelghaffar has received numerous honors throughout his career. In 2019, he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He also received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Hiroshima in Japan in 2018, and in 2015, he became an Academic Associate Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. Earlier in his career, he was the recipient of prestigious awards such as the Distinguished National Medical Award from the National Academy for Scientific Research in 2001, the Unilever Travel Award for Best Research from the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) in 1994, and the IADR Edward Hatton Award for Best Research in Seattle, Washington, USA, also in 1994. Dr. Abdelghaffar’s educational journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in Dentistry, which he earned on May 1, 1984. He later received a Master’s degree on December 1, 1989, specializing in dental antiviral immunoglobulins. He completed his Ph.D. on December 1, 1995, with research focusing on the clinical, bacteriological, and immunological characteristics of trophic fast infections.
